How to Use the XML to JSON Converter

  1. Paste your XML data.
  2. Click Convert to transform it to JSON.

Attributes become @attribute keys. Text content becomes the value or #text key. Repeated elements become arrays. CDATA sections are preserved as #cdata.

What is XML to JSON Conversion?

XML to JSON conversion transforms legacy XML markup documents into lightweight, modern JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) structures. It parses XML elements, nested hierarchies, text nodes, and XML attributes into native JSON arrays and key-value objects, bridging the gap between SOAP/XML APIs and modern web applications.

Common Uses

  • Modernizing legacy SOAP and XML web service responses for React and Vue frontends
  • Ingesting XML RSS/Atom feeds into modern JSON-native data lakes
  • Migrating legacy enterprise XML configuration files to microservice JSON formats
  • Simplifying document parsing and object manipulation in JavaScript and Node.js

Frequently Asked Questions

How are XML attributes handled when converted to JSON?

XML attributes are typically mapped to JSON properties prefixed with `@` or placed in an `_attributes` container to prevent naming collisions with child elements.

How does the converter handle repeated XML tags?

When multiple sibling tags share the same name (such as ``), the converter automatically collects them into a native JSON array `[ ... ]`.

Is my proprietary XML data uploaded to any server?

No. The entire XML-to-JSON parsing pipeline runs client-side in your browser using DOMParser and JavaScript. Your confidential data never leaves your computer.

Notes from this implementation

Attributes and text do not have one obvious JSON shape

XML has elements, attributes, and text. JSON has objects, arrays, and values. A converter has to pick a convention. On this page, attributes and child elements need a visible distinction in the output, or you cannot round-trip a tag that has both an attribute named id and a child element named id. Look at one converted node before you convert a whole feed and ship it.

Repeated sibling elements become an array. A single occurrence of that element often becomes an object. Callers who assume “always an array” break on the one-item case. If your schema requires an array, wrap it after conversion rather than hoping the next document has two items.

What is dropped

Comments, processing instructions, and the difference between a self-closing tag and an empty pair are easy to lose. If those matter, you wanted an XML formatter, not a conversion into JSON.
