How to Use the JSON Minifier

  1. Paste your formatted or prettified JSON.
  2. Click Minify to remove all whitespace.

The minifier strips all unnecessary whitespace and newlines from valid JSON. Shows size reduction stats. Perfect for reducing payload size in APIs and config files.

What is JSON Minification?

A JSON minifier removes all unnecessary whitespace, indentations, and newlines from a JSON document without altering its data structure or values. Minification significantly decreases payload size, reducing bandwidth consumption, accelerating HTTP transfer speeds, and optimizing storage in document databases like MongoDB and Elasticsearch.

Common Uses

  • Compressing JSON payloads before sending over WebSocket or HTTP REST APIs
  • Minimizing database document storage size in NoSQL data stores
  • Preparing production configuration bundles and package metadata files
  • Reducing client-side JavaScript bundle sizes in web applications

Frequently Asked Questions

Does minifying JSON change the data or break syntax?

No. Minification only strips extraneous formatting whitespace between tokens. Keys, strings, numbers, arrays, and object hierarchies remain 100% syntactically valid and identical in meaning.

How much file size reduction can I expect from minifying JSON?

Depending on indentation depth and whitespace, minification typically cuts JSON file sizes by 20% to 50%, resulting in faster network transfers and lower memory overhead.

Can a minified JSON file be formatted back?

Yes. You can paste any minified JSON string into our companion JSON Formatter tool to restore clean 2-space or 4-space indentations.

Notes from this implementation

The inverse of pretty print, with a catch

Minifying removes insignificant whitespace: spaces, tabs, and newlines outside strings. A space inside a string stays. A newline inside a string stays. The result is still parsed JSON, one line, smaller to copy into a query or a log.

Minify after you have validated. If the input is not JSON, the right result is an error, not a best-effort strip of whitespace that leaves the syntax broken. Comments are not insignificant whitespace in JSON; they are syntax errors. This is a different tool from the JavaScript minifier, which understands statements and strings in a programming language.
